We call upon all levels of government and their agencies to ensure that HIV is a public health priority both locally and nationally:

  • Fully implement National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) public health guidance on HIV testing
  • Support the delivery of the Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) by ensuring that local health organisations are equipped to realise the benefits of early detection of HIV
  • Ensure that people diagnosed with HIV have timely access to antiretroviral therapies (ARTs), care and support to improve health and prevent onward transmission in line with the joint recommendations of the Expert Advisory Group on AIDS (EAGA) and the British HIV Association (BHIVA)
  • Ensure quality-assured (ie CE marked) self-testing kits for HIV are integrated into local HIV testing and prevention strategies along with home sampling kits
  • Offer incentives to test for HIV in a variety of healthcare settings

  1. Elton John says HIV 'end in sight' in West
The end of HIV "is in sight" in Western countries, but increased testing is vital, Sir Elton John has said. Sir Elton said early testing was essential to ensure people were diagnosed. He referenced a project his foundation had implemented at King's College Hospital in London, which allows individuals to be tested for HIV at the same time as receiving a blood test, as an example of how more people can be checked for HIV.
