Halve It HIV testing resource toolkit

The “Halve It campaign” is a national coalition of expert bodies calling on all levels of Government to work together to halve the proportion of people with late and undiagnosed HIV by 2020. It is estimated that the number of people living with HIV in the UK (diagnosed and undiagnosed) is around 103,700. In 2014, an estimated 17% were unaware of their condition and 40% were diagnosed after they should have started treatment, despite many having had recent contact with healthcare professionals. (Public Health England – HIV in the United Kingdom: 2014 Report)

If diagnosed early, HIV can be successfully treated and people with HIV live to near-normal life expectancies. Late diagnosis, by contrast, is associated with a greater risk of hospitalisation and AIDS-related illness, reduced life expectancy and increased cost to the NHS. It is also associated with increased onwards transmission, and continued sexual risk-taking while people are unaware of their HIV-positive status.
